Top Sewing Scissors

Ah, scissors. I'm not sure I'd call our relationship a love affair as much as I would a necessary engagement of the shotgun wedding variety. Every pair of scissors I have purchased in the last ten years has either gone dull in a matter of days or snapped in half.

Is it fair to say I'm rough on scissors? Yes. Yes, it is. I cut everything from plastic bags to sticky applique patches. Many a pair of my poor scissors have made the transition from pristine sewing case to the trenches of the kitchen drawer, condemned for all eternity to open hot dog packages.

This went on for some time until a bright idea actually struck me (it happens once in a blue moon). How about I invest in a pair of really good scissors? More...

Candy Wrapper Bags from Ecoist

Last December, Ecoist, the company behind the original candy wrapper handbags, renewed its collection of handbags made from overrun and discontinued bottle labels from Coca-Cola beverage brands.

Since its launch in 2007, the Ecoist Coca-Cola partnership has prevented more than 1 million Coca-Cola labels from entering North American landfills, helping Coca-Cola get one step closer to their goal of zero waste production.

By partnering with major brands like Coca-Cola, Mars, Frito-Lay, Disney, AVEDA, and Cliff Bar, Ecoist is able to recycle old wrappers and packages into clean designer fashions.

Ecoist is currently offering up handbags, cuffs and clutches as some of their most popular accessories. Colors range from loud to the minimal Black and white design seen here as part of the Barcode collection.

Adding to this green fashion attitude, Ecoist has also pledged to plant a tree with each purchase.

Crafting Handmade Goods for Haiti

If you received the last DIY Fashion newsletter, you have already heard of one source of outreach for the survivors of the terrible quake in Haiti. Things are getting desperate over there, but it can feel so hard for us to help when we are so far away from the situation.

Donating money to a reputable organization is always the most direct way to help, but if your budget is set aside for other things, you can either craft for the people of Haiti, or purchase your regular handmade goods with a portion of the proceeds going to the effort. I've been researching a few more ways that you can put your love of handmade to work:

Craft Hope for Haiti - All proceeds of the Craft Hope Etsy shop will benefit Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. All items have been generously donated by the crafting community. If you'd like to donate an item (or for shop updates) visit the Craft Hope website.
Knit for Haiti - If you want to send something directly to Haiti...now is not the time. It's hard to get even food and water in at this point to the thousands of displaced citizens. What you can do it get started on something that will be taken there in March. Sarah at the "It's Quiet Now, What Do You Say" blog has a few friends scheduled to land in Haiti in a couple of months, where they will personally be handing out blankets to survivors. This gives you time to start stitching, and you can even post your progress at the new Flickr group she's created for the purpose.

In the tradition of excellent blog carnivals like Alexa Westerfield's Terrorific Tuesdays, we're starting a group for the holidays to help showcase all the excellent handmade holiday crafts from bloggers of every holiday tradition.

Every Thursday you'll find a new set of tutorials on how to make everything from personalized presents to yummy holiday snacks. This will be a group of thumbnails and links to each project. It's an easy way to browse all sorts of holiday decorating ideas from like-minded crafters like you.

If you'd like to play along, just send me a link to your holiday tutorial at diyfashion.guide@about.com. The tutorial must have a photo of the finished craft so that I can include it in the group photo collage.

Each Wednesday night, I'll email you the HTML for you to post the Make it Merry code to your blog for the day. You'll simply paste the code into your Thursday blog post. Everyone else participating will have the same code, so it's a great way to drive traffic to your blog and network with the other bloggers participating in Make it Merry.

This weekend I recycled 50 plastic bags with my bare hands. I made them into bracelets, wristbands and of course...back into bags!

This was made possible because I had whipped up some 'plarn', or 'plastic bag yarn'. Plarn is made by shredding plastic bags into strips that are easily joined to create an entire ball of recycled material ready for crochet and knit projects.

Ways to Save Your Skin

If you are heading to the lake, pool or beach this 4th of July weekend, don't forget to plan for Old You. What am I talking about?

Well, not too long ago, I was Teenage Mutant Ninja Rain, who neglected to plan for Twenty's Corporate Stooge Rain. Consequentially, I acquired a tattoo on my arm that needs to be covered to fit a business-casual dress code, which cuts into my fashion choices at the office. I just wasn't thinking ahead.

With some luck, I'll be Old Wise Rain one day, and I'll have to be her just as much as I'll soon have to be Thirty's Can't I Retire Yet Rain. While I'm not getting anymore tattoo's, I do need to start paying special attention to the skin on my face, neck and shoulders.

Saving your skin from the sun has more to do with future planning than trying not to turn red and crusty for a week. Do yourself a favor and wear stylish beach wraps and enough sunscreen so that Future You doesn't have to invest in a jug of wrinkle cream. She'll thank you for it in twenty years.

Here are some great ways to stay sun safe without looking like a dork at the beach:

Crochet a Beach Wrap - These short capes are in and can be made out of a yarn that matches your suit or sandals.
Wear Sunblock Every Day - If you wear a light sunblock on your face everyday of the year, an occasional burn at the beach won't have too much impact. Work it into your makeup routine.
